Descripción del itinerario
We followed the plains west from Portals Canyon to reach the Low Point, which is the usual crossing-point of the range.
Instead of crossing at the Low Point, we climbed the ridge to the north of Pothole Gorge, that runs to the west. At one point we dropped down and crossed Pothole Gorge before climbing up to the ridge to the south of Pothole Gorge, just west of its deep cleft. From there we could scramble down to the Upper Giles Spring. This adventurous route is not for the faint-hearted, but it is a little shorter than other alternatives because it avoids the drop down to the plains on the southern side.
We set up camp at Upper Giles Spring then did a side-trip upstream to the saddle that separates Giles Yard Creek from Rockfall Gorge. There is a dramatic view down into Rockfall Gorge, but it looks like a very long rope would be needed to visit the top reach of Rockfall Gorge from above.
