Descripción del itinerario
This route generally follows the PR4 Dolmens Trail, starting at the signboards next to the equestrian centre just outside Baiao (Centro Hipico de Baiao).
At the time of our visit, much of the route passed through areas that were extensively burned in the recent wildfires.
The first part of the route climbs in elevation, but the ascent is gradual and not difficult.
Around the 3km mark, towards the top of the climb, there are several small dolmens that are located slightly off the trail but within view. These include Dólmen De Outeiro De Gregos and Dolmen Outeiro de Ante
After about 5km, the trail reaches a couple of wind turbines and then begins its descent. Around the 9km point, the trail passes through the village of Almofrela. If the timing was correct, it would make a suitable stop for lunch at one of the restaurants in the village - such as Tasquina do Fumo.
After passing Almofrela, the trail becomes narrower with water flowing over some parts of the trail. At one point, we found that the trail had been blocked by a metal barrier, so we had to improvise and use an alternate route via the paved road, for the final leg back to our car.
Overall, it is a pleasant trail with some nice views. There isn’t much shade, which might be a concern in the hot summer months.
