This beautiful hike takes you around the Fagne des Deux Séries and the Grande Fagne, part of the Hautes Fagnes/Hohes Venn/Hoge Venen nature reserve. The hike is on trails, forest roads and boardwalks. Only at Baraque Michel you will find something to eat and drink. Part of the track can be very muddy, and waterproof shoes are strongly recommended. I did this hike on a snowy day and frozen snow on the boardwalks can make it slippery. At the start there is an unpaved parking along the N68 Eupen-Baraque Michel. Alternatively, you could start at Baraque Michel, where there is a large parking and a bus stop. I saw a wild boar on this trip. In summer, with dry weather, some trails may be closed off to avoid wild fires.
From the parking you follow a smaller trail with a big name (Pavée de Charlemagne) towards the edge of the Fagne des Deux Séries. The trail ends at a boardwalk, which you first follow south-west towards the Croix Mockel, a cross in the middle of the moors near the source of the Gileppe River. The cross is at the end of a small trail. You turn back and then follow the boardwalk northeast to the Allée du Grand Fossé, a long and straight unpaved road along the moors. You follow this road for 4.5 km. The Soor stream crosses this road, but for pedestrians a bridge to the side is provided. At the end of the road, there is a lookout hut. You turn south along the moor with the Bongard forests to the east. The road transits into a trail with occasional boardwalks. At the Petit Bongard bush you turn right onto a single path which takes you straight through the moors. In the first section you pass a small lake. A bit further you pass the Geitzbusch, a forest with a lot of dead trees in the middle of the moors. You pass this forest and head for the next collection of dead trees, the Noir Flohay, at an elevated point on the moors. From here the path turns left towards the boardwalk Fagne Walonne from Baraque Michel along the Helle river. You follow the boardwalk upstream and pass a Belgian-Prussian border stone near a Helle crossing. You continue towards Baraque Michel. The boardwalk ends at a trail taking you along the forest. Just before Baraque Michel you pass the Croix des Prieur. At Baraque Michel you take a look at a border stone, a monument to Albert Bonjean, the restaurant/bakery and the Fischbach chapel. You then take an elevated pathl west through the Herbôfaye moor. The track follows the former Belgian-Prussian border and you find a few border stones. At the end of the elevated path is a lookout tower to your right. You continue on La Vêcquée, a straight forest road on the former border. V After a while you pass the Croix des Fiancés (Cross of the Engaged). You then go north-west on trails along the Grande Fagne. You pass a monument to American pilots, and continue along the moors. You enter the Fermes en Fagnes (farmes on the moors) road via a bridge. You follow this straight road past the Sawe river and past some dilapidated buildings (former farms I guess) to the N672 (Jalhay-Baraque Michel road). You cross this road, continue on a short minor path and then follow an unpaved forest road back to the starting point on the N68 (Eupen-Baraque Michel road), passing the young Gileppe river on the way.
