Descripción del itinerario

Thomas Hollis was a friend of Benjamin Franklin,Thomas Paine and John Adams. In the 18th century he owned and ran a large farm in Halstock from where he lived in Corscombe. Hollis spent much of his later life sending books and pamphlets to the American colonies. He sent thousands of books to Harvard university. (The Harvard OnLine Library Information System is named after him. He was an early supporter of America, a critic of repressive regimes, and an active promoter of liberty publishing and distributing books and pamphlets.
Hollis was a Whig, what we would now call a classical liberal or libertarian. Dr. Samuel Johnson, angrily pinned upon Hollis the responsibility for the American Revolution.
He renamed many of the farms in this area after his interests.

This walk will take us past Liberty Farm, Harvard Farm, Neville Farm, Locke Farm and Marvell Farm. Plus fields names such as Socrates, Constitution, Plato, Brutus, Reasonableness, Massachusetts now called Massy.
This walk is fairly flat and takes in the site of a Roman villa, walking along the track of a stream and an ancient track linking Halstock and Corscombe
The paths are not always well signed on this walk. An OS map is essential a gps will also help.
This walk can be combined with Liberty, Revolution and Fields of Dreams Part 2 to form a longer walk that will work for the fitter amongst us.
The historic Fox Inn is about midway through the walk. It could also be used as a starting point. It would be nice to give them some business it is hard for village pubs to survive. Closed on Mondays.
