Descripción del itinerario

Mt. Rokko is undoubtedly the most famous mountain in West Japan. A popular 51 km-long trail connects all the ridges of the Rokko mountains.

We started walking the trail as section hike to give some kicks to our so-out-of-shape bodies after all winter long being stuck at home and doing only desk works all day, before our next three months-long hiking.
Rokko mountains stand right behind Kobe city like a big wall separating the city from most parts of Hyogo prefecture. We started walking from the west edge of the trail to the east.

Though the eastern mountains are low, around 200 to 300m high, the trail repeatedly goes up to the peak and completely down to the bottom. Since the trail is so popular, it is very well-marked and maintained….and thousands of steps, often straight up to the top, looking almost vertically up. Though this trail is seriously torturous, it is also rewarding, with a lot of wonderful viewpoints everywhere along the trail.

This part of the trail also passes through the most popular part of the Rokko All Ridges trail, Suma Alps’s Umanose. Sand pillars and walls created by rainwater over thousands of years are suddenly exposed, and walking through this part is definitely thrilling and adventurous.

We met a local elder who was volunteering to fix the trail alone. We asked if he was a member of the local mountain hiking club or something, but he said he was not; he was just doing it as an individual for other hikers.

We stopped walking at Hiyodorigoe station. Today’s distance was 13km, but the total height gain was 1000m+
